Frequently Asked Questions

How is EV payback calculated?

Payback is estimated by dividing the EV price premium by the annual difference between gasoline spending and EV charging spending.

Are local gas prices included?

The calculator uses editable gas and electricity price inputs. Use your local bill or current local fuel price for the most useful comparison.

Does battery degradation factor into savings?

This calculator focuses on energy-cost savings and simple premium payback. Battery health, resale value, incentives, insurance, and maintenance can change the full ownership cost.

Methodology & Trust

How the EV savings estimate works

Gas cost is estimated from annual distance, gasoline efficiency, and fuel price. EV cost is estimated from annual distance, EV efficiency, home/public charging mix, and electricity prices.

Solar offsets reduce charging cost only as a planning assumption. Actual savings depend on net metering rules, charging time, battery storage, tariff design, and whether excess generation would otherwise be exported.

Payback is a simple energy-savings payback, not a complete ownership model. Add incentives, maintenance, financing, insurance, depreciation, and resale value before making a purchase decision.
