EV vs Gas Cost Calculator Guide
The useful comparison is not just gas price versus electricity price. Distance, efficiency, charging mix, and purchase premium all matter.
The basic comparison
Gas cost is estimated from annual distance divided by fuel efficiency, then multiplied by fuel price. EV charging cost is estimated from annual distance multiplied by kWh per distance, then multiplied by your charging rates.
Assumptions to adjust
Annual driving: higher mileage usually makes fuel savings more meaningful.
Home versus public charging: public fast charging often costs more than home charging, so the mix matters.
Solar offsets: solar can reduce charging cost, but only if generation timing, storage, and tariff rules support it.
EV premium: simple payback divides the extra upfront cost by annual energy savings.
Use the calculator
Start with your real fuel price, electricity rate, and annual distance, then test conservative and optimistic scenarios.
